Mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common and can affect people from all walks of life, no matter their background or age. Many individuals do not find sufficient relief with traditional treatments.

Ketamine is an FDA-approved anesthetic that, when used at low doses in a clinical setting, has been shown to provide rapid relief from depression symptoms for some people. Research suggests ketamine may help stimulate the growth of synapses in the brain. Use for depression and anxiety is off-label; a qualified provider can explain the evidence, risks, and whether treatment is appropriate.

A short history of ketamine

What Is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a well-researched, dissociative anesthetic that was approved by the FDA in 1970. Since then, it has been used in pediatric and adult care, including surgery, emergency departments, and trauma medicine. It is also used in veterinary medicine. The World Health Organization includes ketamine on its Model List of Essential Medicines for its role in anesthesia.

Researchers at Yale University and the National Institute of Mental Health, part of the National Institutes of Health, have studied ketamine for depression in early, small clinical trials. Ketamine treatment for mood disorders and chronic pain is generally off-label; the nasal spray esketamine has separate FDA-approved uses for certain adults with depression. Treatment requires clinical assessment and appropriate monitoring.
